Expectations vs. Reality in the Barbershop
Welcome to my first blog. I'm Stacey Simmons, the proud owner of Clyde's Barbershop in Onarga, Illinois. Let's look at a topic that many of us can relate to – "Expectations vs. Reality in the Barbershop."
You know that feeling of wanting the perfect haircut after scrolling through hundreds of photos on the internet showing people with flawless haircuts. We have all been there, looking through Instagram or Pinterest, thinking, "I want that exact haircut!" Unfortunately, what you see on the internet is not always what you get in the barbershop. So, I decided to look a little further into this topic. I came across some interesting articles that explain more about hair expectations vs reality.
One article from Behind the Chair (check it out here: https://behindthechair.com/articles/expectation-vs-reality-what-you-wish-clients-could-see/) explains what goes on behind the scenes in the hair world. There's a lot more to a perfect haircut and color than most people think. Photos on the internet are usually edited with lighting and various filters, often changing the color of hair or blurring lines in a haircut or fade. Sometimes hair is enhanced with temporary color products not disclosed along with the photo. Also, the use of a high-quality camera with professional accessories can make a dramatic difference in photos too.
Business Insider (link here: https://www.businessinsider.in/why-your-haircut-doesnt-always-look-exactly-like-you-expected-it-to/articleshow/51247739.cms) explains why your fresh cut might not always look exactly how you pictured it. It's not always the barber's fault – factors like hair length, texture, type, hairline, and color play a role too. Sometimes it's simply because of the way your hair grows (or does not grow). If you bring in a photo of someone with thick, dense hair but you have fine, thin hair, it will not turn out the same. Photos are great to use as a reference to point out what you like most and least about the featured haircut. However, to get the best haircut for you, bring in a photo of yourself with a haircut you liked. Or ask your barber for suggestions based on your hair type.
Also, I came across this article on GQ that gives some helpful tips on how to talk to your barber. (read it here: https://www.gq.com/story/how-to-talk-to-your-barber). Clear communication is key to getting the cut you want. Know how long or short you want your hair. Be specific. Also, be open to suggestions from your barber. And don't be afraid to speak up if something is not turning out the way you hoped. Keep in mind that we are not mind readers! We do our best to give you the cut you want, but sometimes it takes two or three haircuts to get it just the way you like it.
So, here's the deal, friends. When you walk into Clyde's Barbershop, keep it real with us. Show us some photos for inspiration but understand that your hair might have its own thoughts. The best haircut for you will be determined by your hair, not always a photo. You don't have to know barber lingo. And know that's okay! We are here to work with you.
It took me a long time to learn this lesson. I have a lot of hair but it is fine! I love the look of short haircuts (like Kris Kardashian), but my hair never looked the same. I now embrace my fine hair and just go with a style that is easy to manage and works for my hair type.
